About Alexis
As a filmmaker, I began shooting my productions in analog video (Hi-8, Betacam), then, in film (16 mm, 35 mm), and later, in digital (DSLR, RED). I have mainly made narrative films, but I have produced three television shows, and made two documentaries, Regrese a Maracaibo/I Returned to Maracaibo, about the Venezuelan political situation, and Prisma/Prism, which is both, a feature length “modular” documentary and a web serial on my family experience as immigrants. At this moment, I am working on a documentary about my band back in the nineties, and the Rock in Your Language movement.
As a teacher, I have lead Film Production Classes, Audiovisual Arts History classes, Directing classes, and seven Feature Length Film Laboratories, where students of different origins and credos, produced four feature length films and won seven national awards.
I also had the opportunity to be part of the group of professors that founded the School of Scenic and Audiovisual Arts of the University of Zulia, the biggest public university of Venezuela. There, I was the head of the Curriculum Committee that designed the program on Audiovisual Arts; I became the first film professor of the School, and ultimately, the School Director.
I am a Native Spanish Speaker and I have taught English at University of Zulia, Venezuela, and Spanish at Ohio University in The United States. I have also taught Screenplay Writing, Creative Writing, and Advertising Copy Writing, among other subjects.
I was the Creative Director in charge of many Advertising Campaigns that included different traditional media: television, radio, newspapers, magazines, billboards, and new media: e-mail, web, social media, helping clients to succeed in their marketing efforts, as an advisor, and as a member of an agency. As a leader of many of the projects I have been involved with, in art, in education, and in every other endeavor, my knowledge in Marketing and Advertising has been crucial in the success of all these activities. From launching films with the help of Social Media, to using e-mail in Crow funding Campaigns, and YouTube videos to promote Art Institutions, I have been communicating the vision, the ideas, and “the emotions” of all these organizations and causes.
I received the San Francisco Art Institute's George Kuchar Memorial Award in 2015, and a Fulbright
Scholarship from the Department of State in 2001.
