About Jo
I grew up in a home with a periodic table on the wall, and ever since, I've seen learning, especially science, as a way to understand the world. That curiosity led me to study astronomy and later ecological psychology. Since childhood, I've loved sharing what I learn with others, which is how teaching became my life's work. During nearly nine years in three different countries, I wanted to understand not just the language, but the people who speak it and the stories behind them. The reverse happened too: people wanted to understand Korea, and I spent years explaining Korean culture and history. I found I had a knack for it, and that's what brought me here. Outside of teaching, I enjoy spending time with my cats and bird-watching.

Whatever the subject, I start from the basic concepts and build up step by step. Students often tell me this makes even complex ideas easy to follow. Having worked for many years as a Korean–English interpreter, I compare the two languages directly, so you learn not only what to say but why Koreans express things the way they do. Lessons are conducted in Korean, with English explanations when helpful.
A typical lesson begins with a short conversation to warm up. We then explore a topic you've chosen, such as a moment in Korean history, a social custom, a current issue, or something from a drama or book you enjoy, through reading, listening, and discussion. Along the way, I explain key expressions and the cultural background behind them. We finish by reviewing new vocabulary and patterns, and I suggest something to prepare for next time.
I bring almost 40 years of teaching experience, from tutoring and teaching physics at a school in Tanzania to guiding visitors at Sydney Observatory. Today I teach undergraduate courses at a university in Seoul and doctoral courses at an American graduate institute. I've lived nearly nine years in Australia, Ireland, and Northern Ireland, and I'm the author of 『우주산책』 as well as the translator of several books on ecology, psychology, and evolutionary history.
My lessons are for intermediate and advanced learners, especially mature adults who want to understand Korean society, history, and culture in depth. They are not designed for complete beginners.
