Drawing 1 - College Level Students focus on technical skills using observational and image-based studies while exploring their own subjects, styles and concepts through projects. Instead of isolating technique and aesthetics from concept, I believe introducing the three components together from the beginning avoids establishing hierarchy among the elements. More importantly, artists operate on multiple levels at once. Although these concerns differ for artists, tangling with skill, form and idea at once is the universal core of making Contemporary Art. Studies range from traditional life drawing to the experimental. Each project is designed to further exploration using a specific technique. Working one on one with students as they develop projects in class, I hope to inspire confidence and independence which are essential tools for artists Drawing 2 - College Level My overarching goal for Drawing 2 is preparing students to succeed at a variety of Art departments. My hope is students will finish the semester having created engaging Art. Each class begins with a quick observational or image-based study reinforcing Drawing 1 techniques. Mirroring Drawing 1, studies range from traditional life drawing to the experimental and I continue working one on one with students as they develop projects in class. Unlike Drawing 1, students choose five topics from a list without prompts. There is no parameter limiting materials, techniques or styles. Finally, students end the semester planning and exhibiting their work in a group show. In Spring 2025, Drawing 2 installed their collective exhibition “Amalgamation” at Chattanooga State’s Denise Heinly Art Center. Introduction to Art - College Level This course is a mix of Art History and Contemporary Art as well as its application. Understanding Art means understanding Art isn’t defined by a set of formal elements or unchangeable historical facts. Art history is a dialogue constantly rewriting its own narrative. How can newcomers to Contemporary Art become active participants in a complex sphere with a slippery history, challenging works, lack of concrete definition, and often esoteric theories? Students learn to critically assess how context influences art too. The first class of every Introduction to Art class begins with a one sentence proposition: Art is people reacting to their social, political and environmental context. The initial focus of assignments, and always evolving lectures, is about the relationship between form and content, and how this grew into movements such as Conceptual Art. I believe it’s vital to rewire any preconceived notions about Art immediately and start by addressing Art mediums. I hope students quickly begin to become viewers not intimidated by Contemporary Art’s vast possibilities as material and nonmaterial. Secondary themes of assignments and lectures include a critique of Classic Western Beauty; the Sublime as a historical movement and breakthrough in the way to be a viewer; the difference between being a passive versus active viewer; Outsider Art as a distinct practice as well as its connection to Contemporary Art; Image Culture and Photography’s subversive response to its ubiquity; Subcultures as a distinct practice, such as Graffiti and Vaporwave; Current Artists appropriating and redefining notions of Beauty and the Sublime. Students complete four assignments during the term. Each asks for opinions with minimal prompts, allowing room for critical thought. Next, students are asked to develop four ideas and submit their plans. I present select projects in class and promote feedback. everywhere.
