About Sonika

I’m Sonika a certified Bharatanatyam teacher, instructor, and performer. I hold a degree in Bharatanatyam and Indic Studies from Reva University, and I’m recognized as a graded artist by Doordarshan, India. I’ve had the honor of performing on international stages through Indian cultural embassies, representing India abroad.
I’ve devoted nearly 23 years to mastering this remarkable art form, alongside extensive experience teaching and spreading awareness about it. In addition to English, I’m fluent in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. Over the years, I’ve participated in numerous Sabhas, Natyanjalis, government-sponsored programs, and corporate events.
Even as a full-time working professional, my love for this art form continues to drive me to keep learning and sharing my knowledge with others.

About the lesson

Sri Gurubhyo Namaha

Harmonizing the body, mind, and soul is the ultimate essence of Bharatanatyam, achieved through a balanced combination of theoretical understanding and practical mastery. I offer live online classes designed to give students a complete, structured learning experience. A typical session includes targeted warm-up exercises, focused practical work to refine posture, enhance Angashuddham, master fundamental adavus, and build precision across various speeds and nadai-s, followed by a dedicated theory segment. Theory sessions cover foundational concepts of Bharatanatyam, overviews of the Nāṭyaśāstra and Abhinaya Darpana, as well as stories from Indian mythology, concluding with a relaxing cool-down.

After each class, students receive detailed study notes for all shlokas, hastas, and bhedas, and practice videos of the practical training are available upon request at no extra cost. In addition, I share deep insights and knowledge on Karana-s. My teaching methodology emphasizes crisp, clean geometric lines, accurate positioning and fluid transitions of the hastas, and expressive storytelling delivered with grace and technical clarity. Beyond regular curriculum classes, I am available to guide and correct specific items from a Margam, as well as choreograph dance pieces for special events, performances, and occasions.
