I am a big fan of learning through cultural context. The best way to learn is to hear the sounds of the language and understand their cultural significance in the target language. I find that this is the easiest way to pick up loads of useful vocabulary and and easy segue into learning correct grammatical phrasing from things that natives read and listen to every day. It’s also equally important to be up to date on the news of the Spanish speaking world and being more culturally literate on a global scale.
I am a recently graduated student from Iowa State University (May 2020) waiting to hear back from a few institutions about being accepted into a linguistics doctoral program. I am fluent in Spanish and currently learning Portuguese, French, Italian, and hopefully more in the future!
