About Elena
My dad taught me to play chess when I was 6 years old, and I played on and off until picking it up more seriously as an adult. I trained for years with a state champion coach and have competed in tournaments, landing around a 1800 rating. This is solidly advanced, though I'm not a chess master and I don't claim to be!
I personally enjoy longer format games with complex endgames, but I really enjoy teaching. Once I started giving lessons to novice players I loved to see their progress and curiosity develop for the game. My focus is on chess fundamentals and building good habits through simple, consistent principles.
As one of the few women teaching chess, I feel especially passionate about welcoming players who might otherwise feel intimidated or out of place in what has traditionally been a male-dominated space.

I enjoy teaching children (6+) and adult beginners their very first chess skills, with a focus on pattern recognition and strategy. Depending on the student's level, lessons typically include one or two instructional games followed by analysis and calculation review. For students with little to no experience, we start with chess fundamentals and simple one to two step calculations, building a strong foundation before moving into more complex strategy. For young children I incorporate focus breaks and let students move at their own learning pace.
I am bilingual (Spanish and English) and I have experience working with neurodivergent students.
