About Ophelia
Hello! My name is Ophelia, and I’m a biology graduate student with a passion for science education. I hold a bachelor's degree in biology and am currently completing my master's in biology at Missouri State University, where I teach and tutor an introductory biology course. For over a year, I’ve worked with students in a lecture/lab setting, helping them gain confidence and clarity in a subject that can feel intimidating at first. In April 2025, I was honored with an award recognizing my public speaking and presentation skills — something I bring into every tutoring session. Whether it's explaining photosynthesis or breaking down ecological systems, I love making science feel more human, relevant, and engaging. If you're looking for someone who is patient, enthusiastic, and deeply invested in your academic growth, I’d love to work with you! I typically respond to messages within 24 hours and am happy to answer any questions you have about tutoring.

My lessons are designed for students who are new to biology or environmental science — especially high schoolers, college freshmen, or adult learners returning to school. I specialize in building foundational understanding for those who may feel overwhelmed or unsure where to begin. My teaching method is highly conversational and student-focused. I start each session by identifying the key concepts the student is struggling with. From there, I guide them through the material with clear, approachable explanations, asking questions along the way to keep things interactive and ensure they’re following. I use visual aids, diagrams, and real-world analogies to make abstract topics easier to grasp — connecting new information to things the student already understands or experiences in daily life. Ideally, the student will give me a general description of what the session will be over beforehand so I can brainstorm some diagrams that may help. I also place a strong emphasis on clear communication and confidence-building. With a background in public speaking, I work to demystify science by creating a low-pressure, judgment-free learning environment. My goal is for students to walk away not just with the right answers, but with a deeper sense of understanding and the confidence to tackle the subject on their own. Please note that I can tutor virtually via Zoom or Google Meet or in-person. Any in-person sessions will be at a public location that is convenient for myself and the student.

Ms. Ophelia Pettington is an outstanding biology teacher whose passion for the subject shines through in every lesson. She explains complex topics clearly and makes learning fun with hands-on activities and real-world examples.
She’s also incredibly supportive—always approachable, patient, and willing to help outside of class. Her teaching not only deepened my understanding of biology but also sparked a genuine curiosity about the natural world. One of the best tutors I’ve worked with. She had, not just a phenomenal grasp of biology, but she was able to explain it in a way that made it easier for me to comprehend it. Highly recommend her for anyone who needs things simplified.
