About Greg

Hi, my name is Greg, I'm 23 and I have a passion for life sciences.
I have just finished a research course in biotechnology and I hope to pursue a PhD in molecular biology in the near future.
As part of my ambitions to study for a PhD, I am looking to tutor to develop my communication skills.

My favourite topic within biology itself would be proteomics which is the study of proteins and their function. I think it is really cool how proteins are alive even though all they are is long chains of simple amino acids.

Outside of science, I play as much sport as possible, and there aren't many sports I haven't tried. I started surfing when I was at university and now I try to surf as often as possible.

About the lesson

Science isn't always easy and part of the challenge is being able to understand and apply new concepts. With my lessons, I have two overall aims for the students:
-To understand any new topics in a way that makes sense for you.
-To develop exam technique to access the highest possible mark for yourself.

I specialise in students who are looking to achieve a qualification such as GCSEs or A levels, so I focus on your syllabus and base the learning outcomes around that.
As someone who has been a student for the last 4 years I empathise with students who struggle to understand new topics.
I also understand that not everyone learns in the same way and so part of my job is to help you focus on the way in which you learn so that you are able to eventually teach yourself.

A typical lesson will last between 30-40 minutes and will look something like this:

5 minute introductory exercise to stimulate students' attention.

10 minute introduction and explanation of the topic of the day

10 minute exercise on the topic of the day to help learn the knowledge I have just introduced.

5 minute exam based exercise with a focus on exam technique and structure

5 minute cooldown exercise where the student demonstrates what they have learned.

At the end of the lesson if the student feels comfortable with it I will also provide some extended reading material to allow the student to explore the topic on their own.

In terms of my qualifications I have A levels in Biology, Chemistry and Modern History.

I have an undergraduate degree from Newcastle university in Cellular and Molecular Biology

I have a research masters degree in Biotechnology and Biodesign also from Newcastle University.

I am happy to tutor any age all the way up to undergraduate degree levels as well as in scientific theory and practice.
