About Jonathan
I began tutoring in January 2020 during evenings and weekends and so far, I've had four students who I've been teaching GCSE & A level biology and chemistry on a weekly basis. I am an academic research scientist with a specific interest in genetic diseases and the molecular biology which underpins them - this is what I do as my full time employment. My background includes a B.Sc in Biochemistry with Genetics, a year working as a microbiology analyst for a water company and a PhD in molecular biology, which I achieved in 2018. During my university years, I undertook mentoring and teaching responsibilities of younger university students and also spent time running after school science lessons for primary age children; I miss these opportunities in my current employment and that's why I enjoy tutoring!

I am qualified in biochemistry and related subjects (including more general biology and chemistry) up to university level (B.Sc), however I limit my teaching to GCSE and A level standards. I'm a fan of letting the student decide on what specific subject areas to go over in each session, which is usually something we discuss and agree on at the end of each session, ready for the next. The techniques I use include going through the key concepts in the curriculum textbooks and using them as a guide, asking short questions periodically to check that the student understands and can make use of the knowledge, as well as going through previous exam papers to put their learned knowledge to the test. This also allows me to see in which topics students may need extra support. I'm also a fan of getting students to draw diagrams e.g. correctly label the chambers of the heart, as this can help to reinforce key concepts for some individuals.
