About Laura

Building confidence is the first step in helping a child reach their potential. Everyone thrives in different learning environments, and responds to different teaching styles. I actively enjoy the challenge of planning lessons tailored to the child, and the reward of helping a child realise their full academic potential.

Aside from tutoring, I am an integrated masters Biology student at the University of York. In my spare time I compete for the University of York rowing squad.

I have experience in tutoring primary school, GCSE and A level maths and science. I have taught pupils with a variety of initial confidence and ability levels; however, through my approach I have helped them love learning and improve their academic results. Every child learns differently, and so I tailor my lessons accordingly.

Aside from teaching experience, I have also volunteered with GirlGuiding UK as a leader, and was a prefect during my time at the Liverpool Blue Coat School (a leading grammar school). Both of these roles have shown me how to engage with children of a variety of ages, and helped me develop my tutoring approach.

About the lesson

It is widely acknowledged that every child learns in a different way, it is therefore not surprising that some children will struggle to reach their full potential in a classroom environment. My tutoring approach begins with developing a relationship with both the child and parent in order to identify what the child struggles with in school and how I can create a learning plan to suit the child. From there, I will build a lesson plan with the aim to compliment school teaching with an emphasis on topics struggled with in school. I aim to develop a flexible plan which will evolve as my knowledge of your child’s style of learning and areas they need to improve upon develops. A dislike of a topic/subject in school does not stem from a lack of ability, but rather a lack of confidence. I believe that building confidence in a subject area, is the key to making a child believe that they can tackle any question, and having the confidence to engage with both one to one and school lessons.

I believe that the tutor-parent relationship is of vital importance, as this allows me to understand how the child is responding to tutoring, as well as keeping the parents up to date with progress being made. My overall aim is to increase the confidence of my tutees in their ability to achieve academically. I strongly believe that an increase in confidence is the first step in loving to learn, and improving academic achievement.
