About Robert
Look, I have a knack for biology, but I also know what it's like to have trouble with a subject, and I'm here to help.
I have a strong academic and professional background in biology, including a BSc in general biology from Northern Arizona University and an MSc in marine ecology from the Universität Bremen in Germany. I have taught biology at the university and high-school levels and have experience working both in the field and the lab. I've conducted fisheries research aboard fishing boats in Alaska and ecology fieldwork in mangrove swamps in China.
My scientific writing experience includes publishing papers, writing a master's thesis, documenting data in field reports, data analysis, as well as reviewing and editing colleagues' papers. I have worked with students and researchers at different stages of their education and understand that students can approach the same subject from very different backgrounds and with very different support needs.
I take tutoring very seriously and want students to leave each session with a clearer understanding of the material and greater confidence in their ability to work independently. If you need help preparing for an exam, understanding difficult concepts, or developing your scientific writing, I am happy to wade in, get you squared away, and walk you through it.

What sets me apart is my combination of real-world field, laboratory, and scientific writing experience. I have published papers on public health and behavioral anatomy, as well as a master's thesis that touched on ecotoxicology, malacology, and crustaceology.
In terms of instruction, I am a big believer in post-methodology instruction. This means drawing from a large toolbox of techniques and adapting to the individual student as much as possible. I have worked with researchers, instructors, and students from all over the world, so I have a lot of experience to draw from. My tutoring also includes value-added instruction, where I draw from a wide experience base to bring high-impact real-world examples to illustrate key points.
For a typical lesson, we will identify where you are struggling and what you need to accomplish. We will then work through the material together to figure out what's not clicking, then break it down and explain it in different ways.
Alternatively, we can use the tutoring session for coaching and study planning. In this mode, we can use the session to identify key concepts and create a self-study plan to make the most of tutoring sessions.
For writing instruction, I can help at any phase of scientific writing. I can help you tighten up literature review skills, guide you through an outline, or review existing drafts. We can also spend time together designing outlines and plotting your research to make the most of tutoring sessions.
