About James
Hi, I'm James. I have a deep interest in theoretical physics and love to teach and discuss ideas with others. During my degree I found that teaching my classmates difficult concepts helped both of us achieve a much richer understanding of the topics we were learning.
I have been tutoring A level and GCSE mathematics and physics since 2017. As I have now started a PhD in biophysics, I'm looking to advance from A level tutoring to University level; my goal is to one day become a physics researcher and lecturer. Therefore my lessons will both be an opportunity to help and inspire those undertaking a degree in the field I enjoy so much, as well as provide me with a chance to continually deepen my understanding of physics and improve my teaching skills.
I can offer lessons in the following areas: classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, electrodynamics, dynamical systems, general relativity, quantum field theory and biophysics. I can also offer python programming lessons

My teaching style is rooted in two principles: 1) Interest in a subject motivates you to learn more and 2) Failure is the key to mastery. My lessons are therefore a mixture of 'lecture' style in which we discuss a topic in depth to build up an interest in it and 'problem class' style in which we attempt problems right at the threshold of your ability to learn from mistakes and build technical skills.
This is similar to university style teaching but as we will be working 1 on 1 we have the flexibility to work at your pace and approach problems from multiple angles.
My lessons are typically 1-2 hours long and are aimed at Physics students currently undertaking an undergraduate program.
I graduated with an MSci in Physics (First Class Honours) from UCL in 2023 and was awarded a prize for obtaining the highest grade in my graduating cohort and a place on the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences Deans List. I attribute my success to my passion for learning and my revision style which follows the same principles as my teaching style.
