About Lucille
I have an MS in Engineering Technology - Biotechnology. I have experience in teaching grade school levels at a private (Waldorf) school, and at a university level as a teaching assistant. My academic training includes laboratory research, quantitative analysis, and scientific writing.
I understand the feeling of overwhelm and anxiety that comes with falling behind on learning material. I also understand the desire to prepare for exams so thoroughly that it leaves no room for testing anxiety. I identify where a student is getting stuck, break concepts into manageable steps, and reinforce understanding through guided practice.
I believe everyone has a passion for learning; sometimes it needs to be fed with structure, encouragement, and modeled enthusiasm.

Having gone to an alternative HS that tailored lessons to students individual learning styles, I understand the importance of adapting to the kinesthetic, auditory, and visual styles of each student. I start by establishing a knowledge baseline through practice questions to measure student progress against. Through this, I assess whether gaps lie in the content, process, or in testing anxiety. Depending on the results, my method of teaching changes. I find learning is best when the student is made to engage in the entire lesson rather than sitting through a long explanation. Bite-sized explanations along with visuals and practice questions for recall results in better comprehension. For ADHD students, I find it best to connect topics together and explain the importance/purpose behind why we are learning the subject as ADHD focus is based on interest.
I have a unique set of experiences in that I have taught a range of ages (K-University). This has allowed me to learn to adapt my teaching to various developmental and subject complexity levels. I managed to obtain a thesis based graduate degree in STEM with ADHD. This required me to learn a lot of coping strategies that I am able to pass on to others. I am incredibly passionate about biological topics and hope to share my enthusiasm with students.
I am comfortable tutoring math (elementary, middle school, college algebra), Biology (college level: cellular, microbiology, fungal, plant, biotechnology, HS AP BIO), Chemistry (College general chemistry I, HS chemistry), Writing (All levels including graduate technical). I can also assist in standardized test prep for any of these subjects.

Lucy and I were in the same lab at the University of Houston Sugar Land - Dr. Abdul L. Khan's Microbiome & Genomics lab. Lucy was a Master's student under Dr. Khan while I was both an undergrad with a senior year project in the lab and, after graduation, an intern in the lab for 5 months. As a lab safety supervisor, Lucy was truly the only one out of all the higher-up students who was vocal and consistent about practicing, enforcing, and implementing lab safety protocols; she taught me and my peers how best to carry ourselves in the lab workspace, which helped many of us get and keep jobs in the lab sciences industry. Lucy is the kind of instructor who both explains all relevant information and demonstrates the techniques in person - confident, self-assured, yet self-aware when she knows that a question we'd have would be better asked of another superior or our lab's PI. She's a great communicator both in-person and online; she once asked me for help conducting one of her data collection methods at our lab while she was on vacation and not only did she leave us with detailed instructions including the locations of tools and her samples, but more importantly, she made sure to follow up with us via Teams messaging and phone texts that same day in a conversational fashion that was neither condescending nor strict. When it comes to actual science literature - both academic research and class materials (such as textbooks) - she was unmatched amongst her peers. She would be the first I'd want to go to when I needed help with questions regarding our bacterial cultures and related class materials, particularly anything to do with microbiology and cGMP/lab-safety related information. Lucy is a great person to learn from - anyone would be lucky to work with her!
