Whether you like strawberries, caramel, or coconut, when it comes to desserts, we’re spoilt for choice. Those looking to become the best bakers or pastry chefs have plenty of recipes that they can cut their teeth with.

However, you won’t become an expert without putting the effort in. To get you started, here are some of the easier recipes for beginners.

Yoghurt Cake

If there’s a recipe that anyone can make, it’s a yoghurt cake. This simple cake is both easy to make and doesn’t take very long. All you have to do is mix all the ingredients and then bake it.

To make this cake, you’ll need:

  • 3 eggs.
  • 1 natural yoghurt.
  • 1 sachet of baking powder.
  • 2.5 yoghurt pots of flour.
  • 1.5 yoghurt pots of sugars.
  • 1 sachet of vanilla sugar.
  • 1/2 a yoghurt pot of oil.
  • 10 grams of butter.

You’ll also need a spoon to mix the ingredients and a cake tin to cook it in for 30 minutes at 180ºC.

Chocolate Cake

If there’s a dessert that everybody loves, it’s chocolate cake. Whether it’s with milk chocolate, white chocolate, or dark chocolate, everyone loves a bit of chocolate cake. This recipe is great for amateurs and professionals alike.

Chocolate cake is the perfect recipe to get better at baking.

You’ll need a few ingredients:

  • 250 grams of butter.
  • 250 grams of dark chocolate.
  • 200 grams of sugar.
  • 70 grams of flour.
  • 4 eggs.

After you’ve melted the chocolate and butter, beat the eggs and sugar into a white foam. Mix the two. Put the mixture into the cake tin and bake for 25 minutes.

Vanilla Madeleines

Madeleines are available in a variety of different flavours and adults and kids love them. Making madeleines isn’t very complicated and doesn’t take very long, either, making it great for beginners.

For 4 people, you’ll need:

  • 3 eggs.
  • 150 grams of sugar.
  • 200 grams of flour.
  • 8 grams of baking powder.
  • 1 sachet of vanilla sugar.
  • 2 or 3 drops of vanilla extract.
  • 100 grams of butter.
  • 75ml of milk.

After you’ve melted the butter, beat the eggs with the sugar, vanilla sugar, and vanilla extract until you’ve got a white foam. Add the rest of the ingredients until you have a smooth dough. Wait for an hour for the dough to cool and then bake in a madeleine pan or similar for 200ºC for 15 minutes and then 175ºC.

Chocolate Chip Muffins

For chocolate chip muffins, you’ll need muffin or cupcake pans. You can add things for other flavours like raspberries, nuts, raisins, or blueberries. The important thing is to get the dough right.

You’ll need a few ingredients:

  • 120 grams of sugar.
  • 125 grams of butter.
  • 2 eggs.
  • 200ml of skimmed milk.
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 100 grams of chocolate.
  • Butter for the moulds.

Preheat your oven to 200ºC and start by melting the butter. Mix the flour, sugar, and baking powder. Mix the eggs and milk and add them to the other mixture and then add it all to the melted butter. Break the chocolate into chips and add them to the mix.

You just have put the mixture into buttered muffin moulds and bake for 20 minutes at 200ºC.

Jam Tarts

  • Jam tarts are great for beginners. These tarts work with almost any jam.
  • Here are the ingredients you’ll need:
  • 400 grams of flour.
  • 150 grams of sugar.
  • 200 grams of butter.
  • 2 eggs.
  • The zest of 1 lemon.
  • 320 grams of jam.

You need to mix the flour, butter, sugar, eggs, and lemon to make a dough and then bake for 30 to 40 minutes at 180ºC.

Pound Cake

The pound cake is probably the simplest recipe around as you just need the same quantities of butter, egg, sugar, and flour. You can also add a pinch of salt and some lemon zest to taste.

Kids and grown-ups alike will love this easy-to-make recipe. You can serve them on their own or with jam.

Cherry Clafoutis

The cherry clafoutis is a French dessert that’s traditionally made with black cherries. It’s not too difficult but you need to carefully follow the instructions. You’ll need a few ingredients:

  • 600 grams of cherries.
  • 40 grams of lightly salted butter and 20g for the mould.
  • 4 eggs.
  • 200ml of milk.
  • 100 grams of flour.
  • 60 grams of powdered sugar.
  • 1 sachet of vanilla sugar.
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • Icing sugar.

Preheat the oven to 210ºC and wash the cherries. You can choose to destone the cherries or not. Mix the other ingredients into a dough. Place the cherries in the mould and then pour the dough over the top. Place in the oven for 10 minutes at 210ºC and then for 20 minutes at 180ºC.

Fruit Jam

Making a jam isn’t the easiest thing to do but every aspiring pastry chef should learn how to do it. You can make jams out of almost any fruit. To make jam, you’ll need:

  • 1.5kg of fruit
  • 1.5kg of sugar
  • 1 sachet of gelatine

You’ll need around 2 hours to prepare this recipe so start by blending the fruit and mixing in the sugar. Then mix the gelatine into two tablespoons of sugar. Boil the fruit mixture and after three minutes, add the gelatine-sugar mixture.

Remove the foam that forms and fill up some jam jars. Close them and turn them upside down get the air out. You leave your jam for two days to finish before tasting it.


Waffles are delicious and a great recipe for budding chefs to make. You’ll need a few ingredients:

  • 300 grams of flour.
  • 2 eggs.
  • 1 sachet of baking powder.
  • 200ml of milk.
  • 90 grams of butter.
  • 50 grams of sugar.
  • 1 sachet of vanilla sugar.

Mix the flour and the baking powder and slowly add the milk so that there aren’t any lumps. Melt the butter and add it to the mixture. Then beat the eggs and add them and the sugar to the mixture. You can now add the batter to your waffle iron.

Chocolate Mousse

If there’s one dessert that almost everyone loves, it’s chocolate mousse. This recipe isn’t the easiest on our list, but with a bit of experience, you should be able to make it. You’ll need eggs, chocolate, and vanilla sugar.

You can decorate a chocolate mousse with chocolate powder, coconut flakes, or even nuts. You can use any type of chocolate but the darker it is, the more consistent it’ll be.

There are three main types of tutorial available and each comes with a series of pros and cons and it'll be up to you to decide which type works best for your preferred learning style, budget, and personality.

Let's start with the type of tutorial that's usually the cheapest, group tutorials. In these tutorials, you'll be joined by several other students and you'll all be being taught how to bake at the same time. Since there are several of you, that means that you don't usually have to pay as much as everyone's paying for the tutor's time. However, this also means that the lessons won't be adapted or tailored to just you and you won't get as much of a say in what you get to bake and what you get to learn.

Face-to-face tutorials are great for those who have specific goals in mind and want a course or lessons that are tailored just to them. You'll be the only student attending the lesson and this means that you can talk to your tutor about what and how you want to learn. Of course, adapting each lesson to you and what you want to learn means that the tutor will have to plan a lot more outside of the session making this bespoke service more costly than group tutorials. You can often get the tutor to come to you and teach you from the comfort of your own home, too!

Finally, thanks to the internet, you can also be taught remotely with online tutorials. By using a computer, tablet, or smartphone, you can get a tutor from anywhere in the world to teach you at any time of the day! Since the tutor doesn't have to travel and can schedule more tutorials each week as a result, they tend to charge less per hour than face-to-face tutorials. Similarly, if you want to learn a type of baking from a specific country, you can get a specialist from that particular country.

While this may seem like a lot to consider before you start baking, remember that many of the tutors on Superprof offer free tutoring for the first hour. Use this time to discuss what and how you'd like to learn, get to know each potential private tutor, and see if you get along. After all, if you don't get along with your private tutor, it'll be much harder to learn anything from them.
