Top USA Celebrity Chefs

Who comes to your mind whenever you hear the word chef? There are many chefs in the USA; however, only a small roster of chefs have made their name globally by starting in the states.

Here are is a list of the best of them:

Julia Child

A legend who was famous long before many of our celebrity chefs were even born. Julia Child launched her television show which perpetuated the present-day culinary personalities and food shows.

If that wasn’t enough, she ensured that her recipes were available to the masses. The Julia Child cookbook “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” was released in 1961 and is an example of this!

Her delicious recipes secured her multiple television appearances, launching her television fame, paving the way for future celebrity chefs.

Julia Child died at the age of 91 in 2004; however, her celebrity status sustained even after her passing.

Her life story was made into a major motion picture by the name ‘Julie & Julia’, helping to introduce the newer generation to Julia Child.

Mario Batali

Mario Batali is quite famous for his television persona and mouthwatering Italian dishes; however, you might be surprised to know that he did not always want to become a chef.

He majored in business management and Spanish theatre at the Rutgers University, aspiring to become a banker in Spain.

However, his calling came when he started working as a dishwasher at Stuff Yer Face, a restaurant in New Jersey. He rapidly moved up to becoming the pizza maker, and as it is said, the rest is history.

Mario Batali co-owns more than 25 well-known restaurants across:

  • Las Vegas
  • Boston
  • New York
  • Chicago
  • California
  • Connecticut
  • Singapore

One of his restaurants, Eataly NYC, is presently one of the biggest marketplaces for Italian food and wine.

Furthermore, Batali has authored 11 cookbooks, been a New York Times bestseller, and received a James Beard award. Batali has appeared in multiple television shows and boasts a cookware line.

Emeril Lagasse

Emeril Lagasse has become a household name today; however, it was not like that when he started.

Today he sits atop his vast empire, consisting of various TV shows, restaurants, packaged goods, cookbooks, and a charity.

Lagasse’s worth has been estimated to be greater than 70 million USD, and it is all the immediate result of his persistence and hard work.

Emeril as a teenager learned to make pastries and bread while working at a Portuguese bakery in his hometown of New England.

Later, he enrolled at the Johnson & Wales University’s culinary program and, only at the age of 23, was offered to be the executive chef in New Orleans’ Commander’s Palace restaurant.

In 1990, Emeril Lagasse opened up his first-ever ‘Emeril’s Restaurant.’ However, that was just the beginning, as he later secured an offer from the Food Network in 1992.

This success was followed up by his very own show, ‘Emeril Live.’ The success of both shows put Lagasse on the culinary map.

Bobby Flay

Bobby Flay’s career in television has been very impressive. Starting the journey in 1994 at Food Network, he is famous for appearing on ‘Iron Chef America,’ and also for playing the host of popular show ‘The Next Food Network Star.’

Flay focused on diversifying and spread himself across multiple affordable culinary arts sectors, opening his now-famous chain of burger joints, ‘Bobby’s Burger Palace.’

Bobby Flaw has been on a mission to prove to consumers that good food does not have to come with a hefty sum – a fact proven by his delectable Crunchburger.

Furthermore, his popularity does not end with his restaurants and TV appearances. Bobby Flay has written over a dozen cookbooks over the years, and he also regularly partakes in philanthropic work.

Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain is arguably the most notable name on this list. He is widely known for his down-to-earth attitude and honesty regarding anything related to food.

Having tragically passed away in 2018, he left behind countless loving fans, an empire only comparable to Gordon Ramsey, and a dedicated clientele at Les Halles in NYC.

However, his other passion besides cooking was traveling. No wonder he hosted the hit Travel Channel series, ‘The Layover’ and ‘No Reservations.’

On the show, he traveled around the globe, sampled international food, and provided insight on the many dishes that may terrify the American pallet.

The main purpose of Anthony’s show was testing exotic dishes and busting the myths surrounding them by simply using his tastebuds.

He would try everything and provide his expert opinion. Anthony was a chef and a food lover first and businessman second, and he even had a knife custom-forged from a meteorite!

Cat Cora

In 2005, Iron Chef found its first-ever female winner as Cat Cora made records and reasserted television history.

However, becoming a chef was never her initial career move. Attaining a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Exercise Physiology and Biology from the University of Southern Mississippi, Cora found her true calling when she attended The Culinary Institute of America.

She can now be found on multiple cooking shows such as ‘Best Thing I Ever Ate,’ ‘America’s Best Cook’ and as a judge on ‘Iron Chef America.’

Furthermore, Cat Cora also co-founded a charity named ‘Chefs for Humanity’ to promote hunger relief, nutrition education, and emergency aid to reduce global hunger.
