About Sonal

Hello, and welcome! I teach bollywood, Semiclassical and Kathak dance. I am a trained dancer with a diploma in Kathak. I love to share the joy of dancing with students of all ages.

I’ve also dabbled in lots of other dance styles over the last 17 years—Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, Belly Dance, Ballroom, Latin, Bollywood, and more! These experiences bring a fun and well-rounded approach to my teaching.

Teaching dance is my happy place. I teach both group and private classes. I’ve had the pleasure of working with students in Chicago Public Schools, teaching them Indian dance, and performing at events by the City of Chicago and the Indian Embassy. I love how dance brings people together, creating a sense of community and pure joy. There’s nothing better than seeing my students light up and move together in harmony.

I’m excited to share the magic of dance with you. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to level up, I’m here to make your dance journey special and fun!

About the lesson

I teach Bollywood, Semiclassical and Kathak dance. We begin by covering the basics of the dance style you choose, helping you build a strong foundation. I break down every step in detail, making it easy to understand and follow; even if you’re completely new to dance. I don’t just teach choreography—I help beginners build stylizing, alignment, and the quality of movement that truly captures the look and feel of Bollywood and Kathak. I also help students develop a strong sense of taal, rhythm, and musicality, which are key to moving naturally with the music and bringing the dance to life.

Every class is tailored to fit your personal needs, so you can learn in a way that feels just right for you. The lessons are progressive, designed to help you steadily improve your skills. If you choose Kathak, we will start with simple moves (hastaks, tatkaar, etc), and gradually introduce Tukdas, Tihais, etc. Similarly, if you choose Bollywood, we will start with basic steps and progressively build up.

Whether you're just starting out or looking to enhance your skills, each class is created to help you grow and have fun. Let's enjoy this dance journey together!

I took dance classes with Sonal a couple years ago, and I am so glad I did. I was a complete beginner when I joined and she made learning easy and fun. She would break down every step so that it is easy to follow, even for somebody with 2 left feet like me. She was friendly and very approachable, and always open for questions. I left every class feeling like I had learned something new. Over time, I saw my dancing get better, thanks to her. If you are looking to learn Indian style dancing, I strongly recommend her.
