About Sharon

Hi, I am Sharon from Hong Kong, and I have recently moved to Melbourne for my tertiary education and career pursuits. I am currently enrolled in the Master of Social Work program at the University of Melbourne and I also hold a bachelor's degree in Arts, double majoring in Criminology and Screen and Cultural Studies, at the same university.

Having been born and raised in Hong Kong, Cantonese is my mother tongue. I am deeply passionate about keeping this language and the culture alive, so I thought I could share my expertise as a native speaker through teaching.

As a trilingual, I recognise and emphasise the importance of cultivating interest in language learning. Hence in my teaching approach, instead of using conventional textbook-based methods, I aim to integrate creative elements tailored to my students' interests.

About the lesson

I'm enthusiastic about helping individuals passionate about learning Cantonese, whether you're a second or third-generation migrant seeking to connect with your cultural roots or a language enthusiast eager to tackle one of the most challenging languages in the world.

I can provide a personal-tailored program according to your interest, availability, and progress. It can be daily conversations, discussions over topics of your interest, and analysing/exploring your favourite piece of writing or lyrics. I can also teach you how to type Chinese using Cantonese phonetics.

I am fluent in English and Mandarin so I would be able to conduct lessons using these languages to communicate with you as well.

Given my current commitment as a full-time master's student, I am aiming to allocate 1-1.5 hours per week for lessons, and am looking for students who are interested in learning the language for non-academic purposes. While prior education in Chinese is not necessary, I prefer students who have some familiarity or exposure to the language (whether Chinese or Cantonese). If you meet these criteria, I would be delighted to discuss the possibility of working together further. Feel free to reach out!
