About Matthew-Zane
Hi, I’m Matthew-Zane (call me Zane!) and I’m a graduate neuroscience student, beginning medical school in October 2022. Although I’m from London, I’m working in Cardiff as an assistant in operating theatres, allowing to gain a better understanding of healthcare today before going to med school!
I enjoy reading, chess, basketball, games, and just about anything sci-fi.
I have recently finish reading “The Tale of the Duelling Neurosurgeons” by Sam Kean. It is a book I recommend to any student thinking of going into neuroscience, psychology, or med school, as it explains concepts of the brain and mind through enthralling real life cases, taking you through the history of brain discoveries!

As a neuroscience graduate, and medical student, I have studied the natural sciences at all levels, doing triple science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) at GCSEs, and Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology at A levels.
Alongside this, my neuroscience degree required an understanding of scientific writing, and a strong grasp of English, finishing with a Dean’s commendation’s for my performance in my final year.
I have also worked for 5 years part time in a special educational needs (S.E.N) school in London (Drumbeat school and ASD service) as a teaching assistant. This allowed me to realise the key to effective teaching, in both S.EN. and mainstream students, is clear and precise communication between the student and teacher/tutor.
My academic and work experience has allowed to construct a student-focused approach to tutoring. Whether it is in English or the natural sciences, focusing initially on strengthening self-identified weak spots in the students knowledge and solidifying concepts they do understands, helps improve the students overall confidence of the material at hand.
As the student develops a better holistic understanding of the course content, the next step is improving their exam skills, revising technique, and to inevitably train them in how to learn independently, and important ability that is essential to higher education degrees.
Typical lesson length would be 1-2 hours unless requested otherwise. With a target audience of A level or GCSE science or English students.
