Now, I have to say that I am bilingual and I teach math. I've never taught Italian and I'm not sure I'd want to, either.
What does it take to be a good teacher?
Flexibility, for one. You have to be able to teach to a range of different people - age, cultural background, learning style, etc. Of course, you may choose to teach a specific age range, for example, but I didn't.
Listening skills. Really listening to people. Understanding them more than you show. I find listening is key when building a rapport with students. Also, you have to know when to push students in some areas, when to hold back, when to help them out - listening is key to this, too.
Clearness. This one, I had to work on. Just because you think something you said is clear or a topic is easy doesn't mean it really is.
Creativity. Goes a long way.
Then of course you have to add some social skills, and I don't think I have to explain that (if I do just ask).
One thing I want to add, though, is that good teachers are ones you recognize as such, even when you meet them as friends. They listen, they care, they are helpful, they explain stuff, they don't judge you. It's what they do in class, and it's built-in, so they take it everywhere they go.
