About Rebecca
I have always loved teaching and passing on information to others, even as a young teenager. This is why I started working as a teacher assistant at my synagogue at the early age of 15, where my role consisted of setting up and helping the children with arts and crafts activities, helping the children with Hebrew, and being a general friendly face to talk to throughout the lessons. I thoroughly enjoyed this position, so much so that I continued to do it for a further 3 years, including throughout lockdown where the school had to switch to online teaching. I believe that experiencing the transition from in-person to online school has equipped me with the skills to teach via both mediums. In addition to my teaching experience at my synagogue, I also mentored a year 9 student in English which involved not only helping the student with their homework and English skills, but also helping the student in question to gain confidence in herself and her abilities, and to inspire in her a love of the English language and reading. I was lucky that in this particular mentoring programme, us mentors were very much open to teach in whatever ways we felt fit, and we did not have a prescriptive syllabus as such. This lead to me exploring some interesting teaching styles with my mentee such as mind-mapping on the whiteboard, taking inspiration for creative writing from paintings and music, and having discussions with my mentee about how literature has shaped society over time. My teaching style has developed into a dynamic mixture of various different techniques and mediums (such as videos, visual aids and discussions) and not just rope-learning, which makes the tutoring experience so much more interesting for both the tutor and tutee.
