About Sequoia

I am a business administration major who has a strong love for mathematics. I am a private math tutor currently tutoring fourth grade and sixth grade math. With my help, consistency, and at-home practice, my students have raised their grades from F’s to A’s and B’s in the span of about four months. I have also helped tutor test prep for college algebra, helping students to feel more confident in their problem-solving skills. I love working one-on-one sessions in person and online with students and I am committed to seeing them progress!

About the lesson

I tailor my teaching style to each student’s unique way of learning. I believe that in mathematics, there are often multiple paths to the same correct answer, and my goal is to help students discover the methods that make the most sense to them. By exploring different problem-solving strategies, students build confidence, strengthen their understanding, and feel more prepared for their assignments.

A typical session with me includes guided practice that progresses from foundational concepts to more challenging problems. I first demonstrate and explain the steps needed to solve a problem, then provide opportunities for students to practice independently, first with support and notes, and eventually on their own. My students and I also complete their homework assignments together to aid in progress.

I focus not only on getting the correct answer but also on helping students understand why an answer is right or wrong. I am patient, adaptable, and committed to ensuring my explanations are clear by checking in regularly and adjusting my pace as needed. I believe strong foundations lead to lasting success, so I prioritize mastery before moving on to more advanced concepts.

I enjoy working with students of all ages, especially elementary school mathematics (1st-5th graders) and college algebra.
