My Excel teaching for professional contexts specifically addresses the gap between Excel skill as demonstrated in training exercises and Excel skill as required in real organisational data environments — the messy data, the complex requirements, and the collaborative pressures of actual professional spreadsheet work. I teach professional spreadsheet design standards — naming conventions, documentation practices, colour coding systems, and version control approaches — because spreadsheets that are used in professional contexts need to be intelligible and maintainable by colleagues rather than only by their creator. Cost modelling and financial analysis are developed as specific Excel application domains for students in finance, operations, and business management roles, covering the specific formulas, structures, and presentation standards that professional financial modelling requires. Project tracking and management dashboards are built in sessions for students who manage projects, covering milestone tracking, resource allocation visualisation, and the specific Excel techniques for maintaining live, accurate project status views. I address the challenge of Excel in collaborative environments — shared workbooks, change tracking, the differences between Excel and SharePoint-hosted workbooks, compatibility considerations when sharing with different Excel versions — because professional Excel use is rarely solitary. Conditional formatting as a data communication tool receives dedicated attention because its judicious use transforms a data-dense spreadsheet from visually overwhelming to immediately intelligible.
