About Robert
I have been playing music for over 30 years and have been teaching for 20 years both privately and in a classroom setting. After receiving my MFA in Composition from California Institute of the Arts, I taught Music Theory at CalArts and California College of Music. Throughout the years I've also taught Improvisation, Blues Transcription & Analysis, Jazz Ensembles, Lead Sheets, and have continuously taught piano lessons and tutored music theory. Recently, I have also been leading Deep Listening Workshops (which if you aren't sure what those are, feel free to ask! It's super fun). As a performer and composer, I have become familiar with many different styles of music including but not limited to, jazz, pop, rock, folk, gospel, hip-hop, blues, experimental (of many different varieties), and of course... classical (including post-tonal music). I've written for chamber ensembles, jazz ensembles, theater productions, video productions, collaborated with other artists and poets, and even written music for animals. I’ve authored a music theory textbook (specifically focused towards jazz and popular music) and have also given guest lectures on improvisation and experimental music. I love to compose, I love to perform, and I love to teach, especially music theory!

Music theory does not have to be a drag! Whether as a performer, improviser, composer or just a listener, it can be an inspiring and often pivotal practice to understand music at a more comprehensive level. It is simply gaining a deeper understanding of sound and our relationship to it. Oftentimes it is taught in an academic setting without offering a broader context or practical application and likewise, is also limited to a narrow stylistic perspective (namely that of European Art music). Music Theory lessons with me offer a holistic approach tailored to your own goals, interests and background. The curriculum for each student is unique and custom fit! However, there are practices and sources of knowledge which are taught for every student. These include: - Harmony (applicable to the style of interest) - Rhythm - Acoustics - Form & Analysis - Audiation (ear training) Each lesson uses four methods for integrating material: - Identifying (Analysis) - Listening - Playing/singing - Improvising/Composing Additionally with my approach, it is possible to practice and learn these subjects without any notational skills! Though, we can certainly integrate that as well if you so choose. My particular background working in many different styles and genres offers me the ability to adapt to your interests. Whether you're looking to add some flavor to the songs you're writing, understand the mysterious structure behind the songs you're playing or simply want to have a deeper appreciation of sound, I can absolutely help!

Excellent! Robert is super experienced and I can tell that he’s been teaching for a while. I also like that he is into experimental music as well as has vast knowledge from jazz to gospel, etc. I definitely feel like he knows what he’s doing and he was also able to show me examples on the piano, which was very helpful for me. Although I’ve only had one session with him, I think he’s definitely a great teacher and could definitelyd help a lot of people and Would definitely recommend him.
- Sonia is a very curious, driven student that I’m sure would excel wherever she goes. While I only had one lesson with her, I see her as a potentially motivated individual with a diverse array of interests.Robert's response :
