About Robin
I have just finished my 3rd year studying Physics at Cambridge University and will be beginning my Masters year in October. Prior to starting my degree I took a year out working as a teaching assistant with the Maths and Physics departments in the secondary school I had just left. I worked with years 7 through 13, including teaching Maths to a small group of year 11 students in a separate classroom for the majority of the year. I found this to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life so far and was thrilled with the results of these GCSE students and the development of all the children I worked with! I also worked with two year 12 Maths students as a one-on-one tutor outside of school time. Moving into my masters year at University I am thinking more about careers and what I find satisfying and teaching is something I would definitely like to pursue further.

My teaching method varies depending on the year and subject at hand, however I firmly believe that as a teacher I should be encouraging the students to arrive at the answers themselves and in doing so hone their problem solving skills and deeper understanding of the topics. With Maths/Physics GCSE or A level, for exam preparation I would largely focus on the past exam papers and encourage working toward a strong understanding of how to answer the questions which reoccur often. However I would still try to stick to the idea of encouraging the students to work concepts and questions out for themselves. A general template for a lesson I would give (particularly maths) would involve some kind of interesting problem solving puzzle, followed by going through the content of the lesson with particular focus on understanding rather than memorization and finally answering some past exam questions, or other pre prepared questions on the topic. Encouraging repeat learning and reflecting on things after you have learnt them is also important and I would attempt to incorporate this into multiple sessions!
