About Matthew

I'm a native speaking and Cambridge-CELTA qualified English language teacher with a wealth of experience in helping motivated students achieve their language learning goals.

I've always seen language teaching as the answer to the age-old question "what's the point in learning this?!" This is kind of question we might all ask in the classroom for any subject!

English is what we call a "lingua franca" that means it is a "world language". It truly is! Think of English not as your second language, but as a powerful tool for you to engage with confidence life around you.

That's why I LOVE what I do! I am dedicated to deepening my understanding of the English Language and don't shy away from further opportunities to build my knowledge, acumen and qualifications.

I'm not just a language teacher, but a language learner as well. I know what it is to learn a language. I understand which areas are more difficult than others. I've seen language learning from both sides. It has made me a patient, empathetic teacher of the English language. I understand that everyone runs at their own pace and learning a language is a marathon not a sprint. You are ACHIEVING simply by running the race!

I have lived in countries where English is barely spoken and know what it means to be able to use a second language to get by. It's not easy and that's why more than ever having a great native speaking tutor will prepare you to take on life speaking English with confidence and reassurance. No more embarrassing errors.

About the lesson

- Your GOALS are my FOCUS. I put you at the centre of the learning. I'm not here to lecture. I'm here to ensure you get to where you want to be; to build your skills and to reach the next step in your language learning journey.

- Communicative, productive focus with no FLUFF - Your time is precious to me and every lesson will ensure we are focussed on what you can do and accomplish by the end of each lesson.

- I am a NATIVE speaker. Born and raised in England. With me, you will be learning English as it is spoken in the real world! Say goodbye to convoluted grammar and scripted conversations; with me, you'll grasp the language as it's authentically spoken.

- I am Cambridge-CELTA qualified and have extensive experience as an English teacher. I split my time between tutoring and teaching at International House London, the birth place of no-nonsense teacher training. There are a lot of "language teachers" out there, but many simply do NOT have the right qualifications, are just trying to make an additional income and could care less about your LEARNING!

- While I may be among the most affordable ESL tutors on superprof, rest assured, quality is never compromised. I care about improving my teaching practice and seeing you SUCCEED... not about filling my pockets.

Do you want to reach B2 level? I will build a syllabus around you built along the CEFR (Common European Framework) guidelines. I will apply modern listening problem solving techniques supported by the current, up-to-date literature in this area.
