Essays can be frustrating. I often felt stuck at school, unable to push past certain grade boundaries. It took me a long time, and a lot of trial and error, to figure out the systems to ace the exams. My mission is to provide students with the tools so they can speed up their progress and achieve the top grades.
My essay teaching methodology involves 6 steps:
1. Identify the purpose of the writing. This will affect the structure, style and tone of writing required.
2. Create a repeatable formula for the key components of the essay's (a) intro, (b) body and (c) conclusion.
3. Examine the style and tone of a student's writing. This involves looking at phrasing, conciseness, clarity, sentence structure, grammar and chains of logic.
4. Formatting the essay. Presentation matters! The formatting of an essay creates a thousand micro impressions that impact the perception of the writing itself.
5. External review. This requires sending an essay away to an examiner or senior teacher, for an additional independent review.
6. Reiterate. At this stage, any final alterations are made and the essay is ready for submission. I aim for students to implement this framework independently at the first available opportunity.
I'm a strong believer that the Socratic style of teaching is the best method of teaching in this regard. The right questions allow students to come to their own conclusions. Here are 3 examples of the questions I use to help students improve their writing:
◉ Would you say what you have written aloud in a presentation or conversation?
◉ Would your teacher articulate this idea in the same way?
◉ Would someone younger than you, without specific subject knowledge, understand your argument? If you would like help improving your essays, please don't hesitate to reach out!
