About Tom
I’m Tom, an incoming Engineering student at the University of Cambridge, having achieved four A*s at A-level in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Design & Technology. One of the experiences that most developed my approach to teaching was spending two weeks teaching in Tanzania, where I worked with around 200 students in challenging classroom conditions. With a significant language barrier, I often had to move beyond simply explaining a method in English and instead use demonstrations, examples and different ways of representing an idea until it became understandable. This taught me how important it is for a student to genuinely understand a concept rather than simply memorise a procedure. I also have extensive student leadership experience, including serving as Deputy Head Boy, which developed my confidence in planning communication, explaining ideas clearly and adapting how I speak to different audiences. I bring that same approach to tutoring: patient, adaptable and focused on understanding. My aim is to help students not only improve their grades, but become more confident tackling unfamiliar Maths and Physics problems independently.

I tailor each lesson to the student’s current level, goals and areas of weakness. My approach is to build a strong understanding of the underlying concepts first, then apply them through worked examples, guided practice and exam-style questions. I also focus on exam technique, problem-solving and identifying common mistakes so students can become more confident and independent.
Lessons are typically 60 minutes and are suitable for GCSE and A-level Maths, Further Maths and Physics students. I achieved four A*s at A-level in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Design & Technology, and I am starting Engineering at the University of Cambridge this October.
I aim to make difficult topics feel logical and manageable rather than relying on memorising methods.
