About Dorothea

I am still very much a student myself, and so strongly empathise with the varied challenges of academics and learning. I believe that self-confidence is the key to academic achievement, and that my role is not just to provide the 'correct' answers, but to nurture self-belief in my students so that they can tackle future problems outside of our sessions. I am also a keen advocate of access to higher education, and so strive to inspire my students to aim high with their academic potential. At the same time, I understand that often the most valuable benefit of a tutoring session is the ability to zoom in on a problem or topic that might be skimmed over in a traditional classroom setting. As such, my teaching style aims to balance tackling specific issues alongside nurturing a broader interest in a subject, so that a student leaves our sessions feeling confident and empowered.

About the lesson

I am currently a postgraduate student in Anthropology at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, but recently graduated from the University of Cambridge with a double First in Geography. I also have A Level qualifications in English Literature, Maths and Geography, and GCSEs in a range of subjects including 9s in English and Maths and A*s in Biology and Chemistry. I have a fair amount of experience as a tutor, having taught several students up to GCSE level. I have also done several weeks of work experience in primary and secondary schools.

I think tutoring should be a student-led experience, supplementing teaching by allowing students the time and space to explore the areas of a subject they are less comfortable in, and form their own ideas of how to solve a problem or approach a question. I want my students to bring problems or challenges to the session that we can work through together, developing a more complete understanding and self-determination. I will also develop teaching based around these areas that students find difficult, so that they leave our sessions feeling confident in their own ability. I am also a firm believer in students developing their own interest in a subject, so particularly for university or A-Level prep I want to offer students external resources or points of interest that they can use to further hone their knowledge base.
