About Catherine
Hi, I'm Cath, a Cambridge History graduate currently completing an MSc in Defence, Development, and Diplomacy. History is my passion, and teaching it is something I take seriously, whether that's helping a GCSE student find their feet or pushing an A Level student to think more critically about the past.
My main areas of expertise are 20th and 21st-century history, with a particular interest in social history and feminist approaches to the discipline. I love helping students see that history isn't just about dates and leaders but about people, power, and the stories that get told and left out. My postgraduate work in international relations extends naturally into modern political history and contemporary global affairs.
That said, I'm familiar with a range of specifications and have experience teaching earlier periods too, including the Tudors, so whatever your exam board or syllabus, I'm likely to know it or learn it quickly.

My lessons are conversation-led rather than lecture-style, drawing on the Oxbridge tutorial tradition of close reading, questioning assumptions, and following an argument wherever it leads. Rather than working through a PowerPoint or a pre-set plan, we start from what you're working on or struggling with and build from there.
In practice, that might mean reading an essay together and interrogating the argument, working through a source and asking what it can and can't tell us, or simply talking through a period or theme until it starts to make sense. I ask a lot of questions, and I expect you to push back.
My sessions are built around you. I'm less interested in drilling perfect answers than in helping you develop genuine confidence in your ideas and your writing. That means plenty of space to make mistakes, try out arguments, and work out what you actually think.
Sessions are typically an hour and are conducted online. I'm happy to work around exam deadlines, essay due dates, or whatever your schedule needs. I am happy to teach any age from 11 upwards.

I highly recommend Catherine as a history tutor. She is excellent at explaining complex topics in simple terms, enabling students to structure arguments persuasively and in building her students’ confidence with coursework and exam preparation. Catherine supported my sister with understanding her A-level history requirements and improving her analytical writing skills, which ultimately helped her achieve an A grade in her coursework. Catherine is extremely knowledgeable and ultimately encourages independent thinking which enables students to achieve excellent grades independently upon the foundation of her teaching.
