About Shuowang

I’m Shuowang and I've recently finished my Master's degree in Engineering at King's College, Cambridge. My specialisation was in data science and machine learning, and I achieved a 1st class master's thesis which was focused on engineering design.

Since graduating university at the start of June 2020, I've been tutoring students full-time, one-on-one both online as well as in-person. The students I've acquired have mainly been through word-and-mouth, with student's ages ranging from 6 to 15. I've designed structured syllabuses and handouts for my students to help them reach their specific goals; whether it's to ace a mock, move up a class set, or just to reinforce their school lessons due to the undesirable situation with the pandemic. My main teaching areas are maths and the natural sciences, for any level below university, and I'm also teaching English to younger Chinese students.

Over the course of my studies, I've identified education as a passion of mine. As an access officer for the King's College Student Union, I was given the opportunity to spend time and talk to over 1000 students in over 30 schools in the North East as part of a higher education initiative. Quality of education struck me as vital in determining a child's willingness to learn and the path they eventually follow. My intention is to tutor full time, hoping to eventually utilise the experience to expand my career in education and provide accessible and quality educational resources.

Alongside my studies at Cambridge, I involved myself heavily in sport, training and competing with the university rowing and basketball teams. I also enjoy playing music in my downtime - highlights of mine include performing in King's College chapel as a violinist in the symphony orchestra.

About the lesson

I plan to tailor my teaching to each individual tutee. I've seen firsthand that different people struggle with different concepts to no fault of their own. I would maintain a dialogue with the tutee to identify fundamental gaps in their knowledge and reinforce unconfident topics in their syllabus. I would teach at the pace which feels comfortable for the student, but will also occasionally push them beyond their envisaged capabilities, including beyond their syllabus.

My approach to teaching itself is to keep it simple and relatable. I've had plenty of supervisors and lecturers who have felt the need to overcomplicate topics to flex their own knowledge. I try to ensure the student reaches a deep understanding of a topic before moving on, so much so that they could teach it back to me. The goal is to provide the students with the skills needed to ace their examinations, but also in a way that allows the skills to supplement their lives further down the line, as they have been taught memorably. Lesson time is limited however, so I plan on providing helpsheets that summarise key takeaways, as well as practice problems that maintain interest and progress between sessions.
