About James
I'm currently doing a PhD in particle physics. Before that, I studied maths at Cambridge and did my MSc in Mathematical Physics at Edinburgh.
Here in Durham I've been lucky enough to teach students in their second, third and fourth years, with subject matter ranging across maths and theoretical physics.
I am happy to help students at any level. At sixth-form level, I am equally comfortable with the A-level and International Baccalaureate syllabuses, and very happy to help with STEP or MAT-style admissions tests. If students want to incorporate learning to code into their maths work, I would be very happy to help.

Hello! I'm James.
I believe every student is unique, and I approach them as individuals, working through practical and conceptual problems they might have, at the right pace for them.
That might mean working through many different areas in a session, or just focusing on one or two.
Where it will help, I will prepare bespoke materials to help lead a student through to greater understanding in their own time, so our time together can be spent most productively. I love thinking up new ways to help people understand things they're struggling with.
Students usually know what they're having trouble with, but can be afraid to ask the questions that will help. To me, all questions are good questions. I strive to explain things more clearly than the explanations I was given. If I need to go back to the drawing board to find a new one, I will. That's progress!

After our first chat, I'll assess how much weekly prep I'll need to do to support your learning effectively and help you meet your goals. That will inform the final rate, which I'll confirm with you before we begin.
