About Ruth
I have a first class degree in natural sciences and a PGCE, both from the University of Cambridge. I have eight years' experience teaching GCSE, A level and IB physics, as well as year 9 chemistry and year 7 and 8 general science, in an independent school. I have also helped pupils individually with GCSE maths at Easter holiday revision camps, and was frequently asked to help with maths and science homework while "on duty" in the school boarding house.
The part of my teaching job I most enjoyed and felt best at was helping pupils individually, and so I have decided to stop teaching in a school and focus on tutoring.

Wherever possible, I will try to enable a student to work something out for themselves, rather than just tell them the answer. Typically, I will do this by asking a careful series of questions, taking them back to something they do understand, then guiding them through the logical steps to the concept with which they are struggling.
In subjects like sciences and maths with a reputation for being "difficult", confidence is often a key issue, so I also try to build this up, offering continual encouragement that it is possible.
