About Matthew
I am a fourth year engineering student at the University of Cambridge, having previously been the deputy head boy at the Royal Grammar School in High Wycombe.
Being a friendly, approachable and conscientious person, I am passionate about helping students to maximise their full potential and develop techniques to help with learning and revising both now and in the future.
I have experience in tutoring maths and physics, both online and in-person, for KS3, GCSE, A-Level and Oxbridge entrance exams. I really enjoy helping students to grasp difficult concepts, perfect exam technique and optimise their time when working and revising.
Given that I am still in education, and having recently sat university exams and my A-Levels, I am very familiar with the pressures of exams, and endeavour to share my techniques for exam success.
Outside of work, I enjoy playing the drum kit and piano.

Before starting to work together, I will always discuss your current progress at school, as well as what you hope to get out of tuition. This will then allow me to tailor my lessons to ensure that they are as effective as possible.
Depending on whether you would like help with a specific topic, or would like to work methodically through the whole course, I will plan out our time together to make sure that you are in the best possible place when it comes to exams.
I strongly believe in not only learning how to successfully answer exam questions, but also having a deeper understanding of concepts, in order to help students to be confident in tackling any problem that they are given. This ultimately leads to superior exam performance and long-term understanding.
My lessons usually involve:
1.) Briefly revisiting material from previous lessons to consolidate knowledge and understanding
2.) Discussing key ideas, concepts and methods of a new topic to gain a broad understanding
3.) Making brief summary notes together (if required), to strengthen understanding and remind the student of what has been discussed at a later date
4.) Practicing questions (specific to the relevant exam board) to reinforce learning and identify and correct misconceptions at an early stage
In order to make the lessons enjoyable and engaging, I use a variety of techniques including drawing diagrams, giving real-world examples and using a variety of resources. This means that lessons are tailored to each student's individual learning style.
Throughout each lesson, I encourage the student to ask questions and challenge their own understanding, and I am then able to ensure that they have the necessary knowledge and techniques to maximise their own revision time outside of lessons.
At the end of the lesson, I give pointers to questions that the student can attempt in their own time to reinforce the topic, and we will discuss what you would like to cover in the next lesson.
