About Valerie

My k-9th grade teaching background consists of math,algebra, reading, writing, the arts, multi- subjects. I enjoy teaching with visual arts to help students grasp academic concepts they may have difficulty understanding otherwise. I have a B.A in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Visual Arts at CSULB. I have taught art lessons to children including museum tours for my Visual Arts concentration. I obtain a K-12 preliminary teaching credential and a Masters Degree in Education with a thesis in reading and writing. I have experience in tutoring students for math, algebra, reading and writing for the past six years online via Zoom or FaceTime and in person. I enjoy using the online teaching platforms, which I have seen increase learning without the stress of background noise and focus on individual academic needs, which builds confidence in students and increases learning . In my 16 years of teaching and six years of tutoring I have observed many students grow confidence struggling academic subjects such as reading and math. I have seen students develop resilience and grow into confident caring students and involved in their community to make a difference. One student for example, developed her talent for art and drawing to have many career choices from architecture to character drawings and art themes. I have seen many students who struggle with math and reading grow to become successful students and have career opportunities that truly make them happy.

About the lesson

I am a person who loves the arts and the outdoors. I have taught in the classroom 16 years. When I meet a new student I try to establish trust right away. This is so important for anyone when learning. It’s important especially when learning. Subjects I taught and tutor are in math, reading and writing and are easier to learn with visuals and hands on activities for example, using text tiles in algebra. When reading difficult material I break it down for students for better understanding. In college I chose visual arts as part of my degree for learning methods. My students mostly range from K-10th grade. I taught beginner learners in reading and writing. I have taught middle school students to excel in algebra using fun activities to workout the problems and break down the steps. In my lessons I show the students first so they can see the steps or process. I provide clear understanding using visual arts for math, reading and writing. They all connect together. I give examples of the lesson and have the students start working on the subject and guide them when needed. My goal for each student is, they can work on their own independently after we have a lesson in math, reading or writing.
