About Carola
Hi! My name is Carola Gonzalez, and I’m a senior Printmaking student at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). I’ve been practicing art since I was a child, starting at La Liga de Arte in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and later attending charter art schools in Florida.
My own art tutor had a huge impact on my love for art. Spending Saturdays learning alongside other young artists became some of my favorite childhood memories and introduced me to a community of artists who are still my friends today.
Because of that experience, one of my main goals as an artist is to encourage and support the next generation of artists while helping students build their skills and confidence.

My Approach as a Drawing Tutor
My goal as a tutor is to help students develop strong drawing fundamentals while also building confidence, creativity, and an individual artistic voice. I tailor each lesson to the student’s experience, goals, and areas for improvement rather than using the same curriculum for everyone.
I combine demonstrations, guided practice, observation, and individualized feedback. Students learn not only how to complete a drawing, but also how to look at their subject, break it down into basic shapes, understand proportion and perspective, and use value, line, and shading to create a convincing image.
What We Work On:
-Drawing fundamentals and observational drawing
-Basic shapes, proportion, and perspective
-Shading and understanding light and value
-Contour and line drawing
-Still-life drawing
-Live-model drawing
-Thumbnail sketches and composition
-Developing confidence with different drawing materials
-Building and strengthening an art portfolio
-Portfolio preparation for Baltimore School for the Arts
-Individualized portfolio feedback and guidance
A Typical Drawing Lesson:
Each drawing lesson is approximately 80 minutes and costs $60 per session.
When you arrive, I will have a still life arranged and ready for you. We will begin with a short demonstration and practice session focused on basic shapes and shading. This gives us an opportunity to work on the fundamentals before moving into a longer drawing.
A typical lesson may include:
Warm-up & fundamentals — practicing basic shapes, proportions, and shading techniques.
Demonstration — I demonstrate techniques and explain how to approach the drawing step by step.
Thumbnail sketches — creating quick studies to explore composition and placement.
45-minute still-life drawing — you will develop a finished drawing while I provide guidance and individualized feedback throughout the process.
Live-model drawing — we will practice observational drawing from a live model. (extra $20 to cover model)
Contour and line drawing — exercises designed to improve observation, hand-eye coordination, and confidence with line.
The exact structure can change depending on the student's goals and experience. All drawing lessons are personalized to the individual's needs.
Portfolio Preparation
I also work with students who are preparing an art portfolio, including students interested in applying to Baltimore School for the Arts.
For portfolio advising, I will first need to see a physical or digital version of your current portfolio. We will begin with a 30-minute initial session where we review your work, identify areas that need development, and establish goals for future sessions. This can be online or in person.
Portfolio sessions can focus on:
-Selecting and organizing artwork
-Identifying gaps in a portfolio
-Developing stronger observational drawings
-Improving individual pieces
-Creating new work specifically for the portfolio
-Strengthening drawing fundamentals
-Developing a cohesive body of work
-Preparing work for an art-school application

-Students who want to develop their skills outside of a traditional classroom
Whether you are just beginning to draw or are preparing a portfolio for an art-school application, lessons are adapted to your current level and personal goals.
What Sets My Teaching Apart
I focus on individualized, hands-on instruction. Rather than simply giving students an assignment and leaving them to figure it out, I work alongside them throughout the drawing process.
I demonstrate techniques, explain why they work, and give students opportunities to immediately apply what they have learned. Students receive direct feedback while they are working, allowing them to correct problems and understand how to approach similar challenges independently in the future.
Most importantly, I want students to develop the ability to see like an artist—to observe carefully, understand what they are looking at, and make intentional decisions about how to translate it into a drawing.
