About Akalya
I'm a full-time student, but I've been playing piano for about 11 years now. I've completed all levels of the Certificate of Merit exam and gotten State Honors 5 times.
I enjoy working with kids, and adults, and I'm patient and can work with everyone.
In terms of piano playing, I most enjoy playing and teaching expressive pieces, such as Romantic era pieces. I also LOVE jazz classical pieces, like Gershwin!

As a tutor, I focus on helping students build both strong technique and musical expression.
My teaching method emphasizes fundamentals such as hand position, posture, and accuracy, while also developing phrasing, dynamics, and interpretation. I adapt each lesson to the student’s learning style so they can improve in a way that feels clear and manageable.
A typical lesson includes warm-ups or technique work, followed by focused practice on pieces. I break music into sections, work through challenges step by step, and then connect everything back to expression. I also include sight reading and basic music theory when helpful, and I give clear practice goals for the week.
What sets me apart is my focus on expression, especially in Romantic and jazz-influenced classical piano. I help students understand how to shape music and play with feeling, not just accuracy. I also create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable learning and improving.
My lessons are for beginners through advanced students. I especially work well with students interested in classical piano and those who want to explore jazz influences. All lessons are held online and tailored to each student’s goals.
