About Jonathan Turnbull

Hello! My name is Jon, and I've been teaching English since 2016, much of which I was living in Rome, where I was also lucky enough to learn the Italian language. Having learnt a language myself, and experience in language schools, international schools and Italian state schools... and those dreaded English exams, I have the ability and passion to take you on your English learning adventure!

I love history, art and culture and I am a qualified secondary history teacher in the UK. Recently, my passion for teaching led me to become a tour manager, working in Italy, Morocco, the UK and across Scandinavia. I am also a bit of an adventure junkie and love being outdoors hiking, climbing or biking. My favourite place to be is either staring at the Colosseo in Rome or standing on top of a mountain!

About the lesson

I have a TEFL certificate which I obtained in 2016, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education from the University of Birmingham.

I began teaching English back in 2016, and I worked for 4 years in Rome at a private language school, alongside doing private lessons and teaching art and art history in an international school there. I taught all ages, and gained a lot of experience doing exam preparation for all levels of the Cambridge Exams and IELTS. I also taught at a language school in Verona for a year. Despite the importance of exams, it is equally important for people to enjoy coming to their lessons so that they fall in love with the language and the fantastic experience that learning a language brings.

Since then, I have continued doing week-long language courses in Italian state schools in the Veneto region, focusing largely on communication skills, using games, challenges and group activities or projects to learn. I therefore have a very conversation-driven teaching methodology, and depending on the level, I like to focus on vocabulary as I often find that is the thing people struggle with the most (myself included!). As a classroom teacher, I have extensive experience teaching complex grammar rules to all ages and abilities at the same time.

Finally, as a holder of a UK teaching qualification to teach to Secondary level, I also have the theory and academic understanding of education. This was a rigorous year-long programme where I was monitored and trained by professional teachers in state schools.
