About Hector
I design a curriculum that reflects diverse voices to engage the students; for example, A Long Way Home tells the story of a boy from India separated from his family and subsequently adopted. I was able to discuss and formulate arguments with the classes concerning international adoption, imperialism, and the idea of belonging. In studying Macbeth, we studied the texts and compared them to film adaptations; particularly Denzel Washington’s portrayal of the title character. Students were asked how the dynamic of the play changes with a black lead, particularly an older black man. What expectations does the casting bring in terms of emotional intelligence between generations of men, with the younger Macduff being in touch with his emotions over the murder of his family. What does Shakespeare have to say concerning nations ruled by bad leaders? Diversity within the students and their own voices also added to the analysis of other works such as Little Women. While the original is beloved by generations of readers, not many know that the story was retold from the perspective of four black sisters in the Freedpeople’s Colony of Roanoke Island and published as the novel, So Many Beginnings. How does this interpretation of the story change the various expectations for the four sisters within their culture and time? It is an honor and privilege to bring this type of instruction to my classroom and my students.

I want to make works of literature and history relevant to the students, and even question why certain phrases/words/writing choices are made. In the classroom, I design a curriculum that reflects diverse voices to engage the students. Diversity within the students and their own voices also add to the analysis of other works.
