About Matt
Thanks for considering me as your golf coach. This game grabbed me at age 18 in Northern Wisconsin and it has never let go. I was fortunate to have been mentored by several excellent golf coaches when I began my quest to move the golf ball toward my intended target . It would be my honor to have the opportunity to share the feel-based golf swing and golf game with you that I received early in my career which has served me well.
The testimonials from my website are an excellent indication of the effect my coaching has had with those whom I have had the good fortune to work with!
When a golfer releases all control over the club and truly makes solid contact followed by the perfect ball flight, I believe that I get just as excited as he or she! That feeling is what hooks everyone. It is my job to help them find what I know they already have. It is my duty to unlock that inner swing.
Beginners are the engine that powers the continued growth of this great game and I get tremendous satisfaction from mentoring new golfers. Junior golf instruction is especially gratifying, as teaching affords me the opportunity to see these young people become not just solid golfers, but solid citizens as well. In our current instant-gratification world, seeing patience, persistence, and practice pay off for these youngsters is a great feeling!
Seeing the look of pure satisfaction on the faces of those I coach keeps me going! I have the greatest office on the planet.
I was teaching Hang Gliding in Santa Barbara California in 1982. One of my students was an avid golfer and we started playing nine holes every morning as the sun rose over the Santa Barbara Community Golf Course. I had been playing golf for a few years, but by playing every morning, I assumed my game would rapidly improve and I would be a tour player in a couple of years!
I signed up for some lessons with a local Pro and the hook was set! I kept on flying hang gliders but decided the market for golf instruction was going to be better than for running off of mountains with an aluminum and Dacron wing on your back. I did get that one right! Now here I am 43 years later still coaching golf and still flying hang gliders!
I began teaching as an assistant Golf Professional in 1984 in Santa Barbara earning membership into the PGA of America in 1986. I have always been an instructor my entire adult life teaching Hang Gliding, drums, Ice Hockey officiating, water skiing and Martial Arts. Seeing those whom I coach improve through feel is my greatest satisfaction.

We begin with the swing as a whole. In golf, we put nails in our shoes because the power in the golf swing in generated through our connection to Terra Firma. The power starts with the feet, knees and hips being "active" while the upper body "reacts" to the lower body in a purely passive state. This allows the body to store up tremendous energy potential through the rotation of our fixed pivot with the club head whirling around the body finally flashing through the ball as if mad with rage!
I have worked with golfers of ALL ages, physical abilities and challenges. There is a golf swing in everyone. It is my goal to unlock yours...
The PGA keeps very good data on the golf business. Unfortunately, the number one reason people quit playing golf is because they had a bad experience with a golf lesson.
That will NOT be the case when we get together!
I take great pride in my reputation after all these years. I have always focused on working with the good parts of the swing and expanding from there.
Letting go of our quest to control the club with our upper body is where we spend consiserable time. Once we understand the importance of a "passive" upper body, the swing will "change" on its own! You will see...
Drive, Chip and Putt!!!!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Over 90% of my first-time students opt in for the savings of a series but that decision is based on their improvement and satisfaction with our first session.
RESULTS is the name of the game!

Perfect! Very patient. Communicates well very well. Makes the best use of our time and has already cleaned up a lot of of my game.
Perfect! My wife and I took our first lesson from Matt and he was an incredible help.
We went over everything including form and the little nuances to improve our game.
Looking forward to working with him in the future!Perfect! Matt provides a great explanation of how to swing, what to feel and he is very patient
Perfect! Great guy! Highly knowledgeable! Easy to talk to! He will change the way you THINK about the golf swing and the game of golf, which translates into better play and a better swing! Could not be happier with the results. Matt's awesome!
Perfect! You can tell immediately that Matt knew what he was doing. After looking at only one or two swings of mine he knew exactly what to work on to improve my swing. Many people can play the game well but teaching is a entire different story. The hour lesson flew by. He has a great personality which really relaxes you and you can really have a great time at the lesson. I feel like I have found a great coach.

Where do I start...I have decided to take golf seriously this year. I was your typical weekend warrior, or maybe on the course once a month. I needed a bit of help as I was suffering from a strong push slice. Coach Matt, I say respectfully, renewed my love for the sport. He made changes without changing my swing. He goes much more in depth about your mindset and instilling belief in your swing and game.
I've been a strong hitter, but my iron play has turned pure and I have added 20 yards easily. He's teaching method of feel and belief is one-of-a-kind. I can now choose to play a draw or fade, flop or punch. Coach Matt, thank you for your instruction and friendship. I have found my coach and this is only the start. Top Notch PGA Instructor.
You have to call him today.
One lesson will have you hooked and you'll note very fast improvements.

I shot +1 for a 73 today! Thank you for everything. I keep improving my game.
I will be in touch for that final lesson on the course to talk strategy.
You've really changed every aspect of my game and I can't thank you enough.
Matt, THANK you so much for the club fitting session today! Both Jeff and I learned so much and you are extremely talented in explaining how (and more importantly, to me) and the “whys” on how to improve our grip, stance and swing. I would HIGHLY recommend golfers to seek you out (if you need me to contact any doubters, just let me know!)
I’m hoping we’ll be able apply everything we learned! You really made Jeff’s birthday memorable and I’m sure he’ll be keeping in touch with you😉.
-Joyce & Jeff from So. CAI literally just had the best range day of my life! Best ball striking that I can remember and I'm barely holding on to the club. Maybe 75% swing!
Brian C Las VegasHE saw my problems corrected them. Each lesson led to the next. I am a better golfer for it. Thanks Matt
If anyone is looking for golf lessons I would highly recommend going to Matt D! He gives extremely useful advice on all swings. He has literally helped shave 30 strokes off my game in the last 9 months. Without him showing me the proper way to swing, I don't think that would have been possible. Not to mention he does so while keeping a stress free fun environment to hit/play.
I took my last lesson set of 5 yesterday, November 28th, I can not wait to put the whole package together, and take it to the golf course. I got the lesson's, is up to me to in put the time.
After the first lesson, I was feeling confident I can take it to the golf course. Matt understands and explains everything very easy, and visually, which is what I am, a visual and feel player, I don't even use gloves, everything is about visual and feel. I got my draw on my shots back, which I have lost, it is my shot shape since my first lesson in 2001. That is how I know I'm hitting the ball as I'm suppose too. That was gone and it drove me crazy, plus when that draw is not there, I know I'm in trouble. Matt was able to identify what I was doing wrong, and set me up properly. Since I have taken so many lesson's, it was easy for me to get the feel of what I was doing wrong, "Not setting up Square" was my big fault.
Also chipping was fixed after one lesson. Putting was fixed after one lesson. Now I got the visuals and all I have to do is put the time to fine tune it and take it back out to the course. Not to brag but my handicap was a 3 five years ago. Then I lost my draw. I started taking lessons with PGA Teaching Professional's as you should. Some pointed me to You Tube videos, Or tried to make me swing like Adam Scott or Justin Rose, which NO ONE SHOULD DO BY THE WAY,. That is just bad. You are you and you would go in a path that you would just get worse and worse watching videos or not finding the proper PGA Teaching pro for you.
So take a lesson, find the Pro that answer your question's, and not just manipulates your body and put it in a position, that your own body, knows is not or does not feel good. For me that was Matt, since he is also a feel player, it was easy for me to understand and apply my own to what we found I was doing wrong. So thank you again. I can't wait to get my game back.

Jeff M. TampaGreat lesson yesterday. Played Crescent Oaks today and lowered my score by 8 strokes. Learning how to relax was paramount with me. Thanks!
I haven't played golf or even been to the range in almost 5 years. When I dusted off my clubs this fall and went to the range I quickly found out that I lost the average swing that I used to have. I was forcing and muscling every shot which created the dreaded outside to in swing path and massive slice. I contacted Matt after I grew frustrated after a few times on the range and worked out a lesson plan with him. After a few minutes into our first lesson, he simply explained a few fundamentals, talked me out of the tension in my hands, arms and upper body, and had me hitting the balls effortlessly . Now after only 3 lessons, I feel like he has done a tremendous job finding where my swing was, coaching me to where it needs to be without complicating it with a bunch of jargon about angles, swing planes and what-not.
Matt presents things easily and coaches you into how the swing should feel which I have found to be TREMENDOUSLY helpful. I want to simply say "thank you Matt !" You have made me enjoy the game so much more. I would definitely recommend Matt to anyone who wants to improve from where they are now.View more recommendations
