About GALEET
Who am I? I am a well loved, enthusiastic teacher, who has been teaching reading and writing to K-8th graders for the last 12 years at Fairfax County Public Schools. I take the time to get to know your child. I make lessons fun by incorporating games, visual activities, singing, dancing, music, videos, and other engaging ways that make your child think about text they read without even realizing it. I help children and teens ask questions and we figure out best ways to answer these.
My credentials include a Ph.D. in Education, a master degree in teaching, and 30 graduate credits from UVA as a reading specialist. I am certified to teach reading and ESOL in Virginia. Why did I spend so much time in graduate school? I believe that success in adulthood depends on the ability to read, comprehend text, and being able to discuss and write about it at the highest level. Teaching these skills to kids has been a calling, and the many thank you notes my students have wrote to me over the years is a testament to that.

My experience is that when it comes to reading, struggling readers (we actually use the term striving readers) do better when the text is relevant to their life experience/ culture. I put time and effort into identifying texts that would be of interest to your child. Because understanding reading depends on many different aspects, I assess my students in order to determine their areas of strength and areas of needs. I use this information to build a lesson that features a topic of interest to your child. The lessons have the following components: building/ activating your child's background knowledge, teaching new vocabulary related to the reading, an appropriate level text and video(s) and websites, comprehension questions related to the text, spelling games relevant to the text, and a writing component. Each lesson concludes with a summary and an activity for the child to work on their own until the next lesson. What sets me apart from other tutors is that my lessons are interactive, bring a variety of resources to engage kids and teens, I am optimistic and encouraging of students' efforts, and I am supportive of parents and their efforts to empower their children.
