About May

In addition to the last 3 years in the classroom, I have been tutoring math, both privately and with organizations like Mathnasium, for over 10 years. I have a degree in Qualitative Social Science (focused in Education) from Dartmouth College and Master of Teaching from NYU. I am certified in elementary education and special education and have taught from kindergarten to calculus!

I have experience both assisting students with their school material as well as providing targeted, individualized intervention to build math literacy and number sense. I am passionate about helping every learner succeed. Don't hesitate to reach out!

About the lesson

I base my teaching on my pedagogical research. I believe in culturally responsive teaching, meeting students where they are at emotionally as well as intellectually, and focusing on fostering a student's growth mindset to set them up to think critically and challenge themselves.

I am a big believer in curiosity as the greatest motivator and foster this intrinsic motivation in my students by strengthening their math fluency and confidence. Learning is a vulnerable and often frustrating process, so I prioritize relationship building in all that I do.

A typical lesson may include all or some of the following:
- Completing a portion of school work (homework, studying for tests, etc)
- Building number fluency
- Assessing progress
- Reteaching (prior skills necessary for current school work or goals, reviewing that day's lesson, etc)
- Word problems or other targeted practice
