Everyone who embarks on the journey of learning a new language inevitably reaches that moment of realization of how complex that task is, the skills required, and one's own deficiencies to match them. This moment came for me as Chinese language student, when I realized, how difficult the mastering of a tonal language is. It is not just a matter of memorizing vocabulary and grammar; in Mandarin, subtle intonations of each single word are essential to the meaning. To Western ears, these nuances can be sometimes unrecognizable, and even more often, difficult to reproduce accurately.
Coming to terms with this reality can be disheartening. It challenges one’s motivation and clouds the path forward, not rarely leading to the discontinuation of learning this language.
Fortunately for me, I met at that moment Vickey Lu—a compassionate and very smart teacher. By recognizing my difficulties and by adapting her approach, breaking down the learning process into manageable, tailored steps, by setting smaller, attainable goals, she allowed me to experience progress and rebuild my confidence.
Vickey is a passionate educator whose enthusiasm for the Chinese language and culture is genuinely inspiring. Her lessons are thoughtfully individualized, encompassing not only linguistic instruction but also cultural insights and ample speaking practice.
