I believe that a good understanding of principles and theory is key to achieving the highest grades across most subjects, as this provides the understanding needed to deal with difficult questions. However I am also flexible and can adopt different approaches for students of different ability.
Lesson structure will typically start with btiefly outlining key objectives and then diving straight into learning the theory. Once the student understands the theory I move onto applying it to exam style questions (or simpler initially if required), and then get the student to summarise what they learnt at the end, in order to aid long-term retention of information
