About Pearl
As a saxophone instructor, I believe that cultivating both technical skill and musical expression is key to helping students thrive. My teaching begins with a thorough grounding in essentials: breath control, embouchure formation, finger coordination, posture, articulation, tone production, and intonation. These elements create a strong foundation for expressive and sustainable playing. I integrate improvisation from the beginning, encouraging students to explore scales, modes, and harmonic patterns through ear training, call-and-response exercises, and improvisational storytelling. Theory is embedded in lessons in a practical manner, linked directly to repertoire and improvisation so students can immediately apply concepts. I select repertoire collaboratively, ensuring students engage with music that excites them, whether it be jazz standards, blues, pop, or classical pieces. Goal-setting and personalized practice routines are essential components of my approach, helping students maintain focus and measure progress. Technology tools such as recording apps, metronomes, and backing tracks play an important role in facilitating independent practice and critical listening. One memorable teaching moment was guiding a student from hesitant beginner to confident soloist, underscoring the transformative power of patience and encouragement. My goal is to nurture saxophonists who are both technically capable and artistically fulfilled, ready to embrace music with confidence and joy.

My approach to teaching saxophone is rooted in combining technical rigor with artistic freedom to nurture well-rounded, expressive musicians. I begin with foundational techniques such as breath control, embouchure formation, articulation clarity, finger agility, and tone development to ensure healthy and versatile playing. I integrate theory, sight-reading, and ear training early to equip students with the tools for improvisation, ensemble playing, and composition.
Each lesson is customized to align with the student’s musical preferences—be it bebop, blues, funk, or contemporary pop—making the learning experience engaging and relevant. Improvisation is a key element; I guide students step-by-step through scales, melodic shaping, rhythmic creativity, and phrasing to build musical confidence and originality. Technology is incorporated with recording devices, slow-downer apps, and backing tracks to enhance practice and self-assessment. I also focus on performance coaching, helping students develop stage presence, manage nerves, and connect emotionally with their audiences.
I cultivate a supportive and inspiring space where students are encouraged to take risks and learn from mistakes. A rewarding milestone was helping a student transform from a hesitant beginner into a confident soloist in their school jazz ensemble, showing the impact of personalized instruction. My mission is to empower students to become skilled, passionate saxophonists who express themselves authentically through music.
