About Sam
I am an enthusiastic and engaging tutor and teaching assistant. I have worked part-time as a tutor for seven years and spent my gap year working full time for St. Philip’s School. I love literature and drama and I particularly enjoy sharing what I love about those subjects with young people. I adore teaching English, History and Theology, and happily teach the Sciences, French and Latin, up to GCSE level, as well as Maths and Geography up to Common Entrance Level.
I started tutoring seven years ago, when I became Junior Master at St Philip’s, an independent preparatory school in South Kensington. I worked at the school teaching reading to Forms Three, Four and Five as well as Geography (Form Five only). I also coached Football, Touch-Rugby and Cricket, directed the school play, 101 Dalmatians, and ran the ‘Homework Club’, an after-school class where boys could do their Homework and I would be on hand to help them with anything they struggled with.
In the evenings and on weekends, I tutored a number of pupils to help prepare them for their Common Entrance exams. In addition, I also tutored younger students who were struggling and foreign language students who needed help with their English.
After working at St. Philip’s, I read English and Related Literature at the University of York and studied Drama at LAMDA. While studying, I taught a variety of students including some boys from St. Philip’s, two girls for their Eleven Plus exams and gave English conversation classes to adult Russian speakers at ENRC.
Since graduating LAMDA, I have worked consistently as a tutor around my acting career. I work with Lionheart Education, The Code and Young Giants. For Lionheart, I have taught a wide variety of students: Common Entrance, Winchester Entrance, Eton Scholarship, and GCSE. I also taught as part of the school, often working with students who need help transitioning from one school to another.
My experience has given me an invaluable perspective on teaching. Everyone remembers their teachers, the wonderfully inspiring ones and the not so inspiring ones. This is because of the unique responsibility a teacher has. A young mind is always brilliant and full of potential, but it is also delicate and impressionable. A good teacher knows this and works hard to ensure that every student is interested in what they are learning, recognised for who they are, and most importantly, happy. I believe by cultivating these attributes in my students I am not only helping them to achieve the grades they deserve, but I am providing them with the tools they need for well beyond their school days.
