I believe the best way to learn is through active engagement. Minimizing passive listening, and maximizing active problem solving results in a more confident and proficient student. The job of an instructor/tutor is to assist a student in finding their own solutions, not in constraining a student to follow a set script.
I work in a patent law firm helping clients obtain IP protection for their inventions. I have taught college level chemistry classes in both the US and in China, and have been tutoring chemistry off and on for over a decade.
