About Matthew
I have achieved a Master of Engineering (2:1 MEng) degree in Chemical Engineering, graduated in 2017 from the Queen's University of Belfast.
I have since spent the last 4 years working within a diversity of industrial sectors including: Food & Beverage Engineering, Plastics Manufacturing, Aerospace Manufacturing, and currently in Pharmaceutical Engineering.
I am passionate about mathematics and science and aim to enhance understanding of key concepts and critical thinking, not just for the purposes of achieving and maintaining a high end job in STEM, but also to transfer useful skills to tackle everyday challenges we all face from time to time in a creative and efficient manner.
I enjoy a variety of sports, games and puzzles, e.g. Rugby, Cycling, Ju-Jitsu, Cards, D&D, Sudoku and Rubiks' puzzles to name a few.

My approach to introducing a new topic to a student begins with illustrating the relevance of the subject matter to the real world.
In my experience, conventional approaches to learning often fail to bridge the gap between the abstract problem and application to the real world. In other words, students have no idea why what they are doing is important and rarely is anyone motivated to do something they can't see meaning in.
I reduce problems down to their simplest forms and as we gain understanding of the basic concepts, principles, methods & techniques, remove simplifying assumptions and build up the complexity of the problem. Sometimes this means breaking the problem down into stages if there are multiple techniques used to develop the solution and focus on each technique separately before bringing together for a full solution.
At appropriate checkpoints, usually before adding complexity to the problems, we have a review of understanding by solving a set of problems presented in various scenarios so the student can develop a recognition of applying various techniques to unfamiliar scenarios. When the student can comfortably solve a variety of problems consecutively with no errors, we then add complexity to the problems to make them more challenging and realistic.
I would tend to educate the student to a level just beyond the difficulty they would encounter in the exam. We often don't perform to the best of our ability in an exam setting due to stress, so getting comfortable with more challenging problems helps build confidence in tackling the exam problems as the student is not required to perform to the limit of their capabilities.
Diagrams, illustrations, and even physical activity are key to support understanding of concepts.
