About Pratyusha

I'm a research scientist with a PhD in Chemistry from Tufts University and a B.Tech in Biotechnology from IIT Madras. I spent 14 years in biotech working on CRISPR gene editing and RNA therapeutics, and my research has been published in Science and Nature Communications.

I've taught throughout that time: undergraduate chemistry courses and lab sections at Tufts, classroom science and math for students preparing for entrance exams, and training scientists on my own teams.

I tutor biology, chemistry, physics, and math, from middle school through undergraduate level, including AP courses. Every session is planned around what that particular student actually needs. I'm organized, I show up prepared, and I'm always glad to talk first so you can decide whether I'm the right fit.

My teaching method and techniques
- I teach from first principles. I believe that understanding the underlying ideas is the best way to build confidence and while it may take time initially it will save time in the long run.
- I typically begin with understanding where the student feels strong and weak and identifying the real gaps.
- I utilize multiple explanations for a topic and use analogies whenever possible. I try to connect concepts to what students already know to make things interesting and also to help them build mental maps.
- I focus on active learning, including problems along the way that demonstrate mastery of concepts. I strongly believe that doing is the best way to learn. I ask the student to explain concepts to me in their own words.

A typical lesson plan

- Check-in and review questions from homework, and a quick recall of last session's key ideas.
- Identify one problem to see what stuck and what didn't. This shapes the rest of the session.
- Introduce core concepts, build it from fundamentals, and work through an example and reasoning together
- Guided practice - solve problems together.
- Independent problem solving by students to assess mastery and gaps.
- Recap - student summarizes the main idea, and assign targeted practice aimed at recalling concepts and bridging weak points.
- For exams, I focus on timed practice tests, reviewing questions that students are stuck at and help with test-taking strategies.

What sets me apart

- I've done the science, not just taught it. I hold a PhD in Chemistry from Tufts and a B.Tech in Biotechnology from IIT Madras, and I spent 14+ years as a research scientist in biotech working on CRISPR gene editing and RNA therapeutics, with work published in Science and Nature Communications. When a student asks "why do we need to know this," I have a real answer.
- I teach across biology, chemistry, physics, and math — so I connect them instead of treating them as separate subjects. Chemistry makes far more sense once the physics underneath it is clear, and biology becomes much less about memorization once you understand the chemistry.
- I know high-stakes testing from the inside. I earned my place at IIT through the Joint Entrance Exam, a math/physics/chemistry test taken by hundreds of thousands of students. I understand the preparation, the strategy, and the pressure firsthand.
- I've taught a wide range of levels — middle schoolers in a classroom setting, undergraduates in university labs, and professional scientists on my teams. I'm used to calibrating to whoever is in front of me.
- I focus on confidence, not just scores. Much of what looks like "not getting it" is anxiety. I'm patient, I don't make students feel foolish for asking, and a bit of humor goes a long way toward turning stress into curiosity.

Who the lessons are for

I work with students from middle school through university:
- Middle school (grades 6–8): Science and math foundations, plus preparation for competitive entrance exams.
- High school: Biology, chemistry, physics, and math — including AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and AP Physics, and standardized test preparation in the math and science sections.
- College / undergraduate: General and organic chemistry, introductory biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry.
- Adult learners moving into the life sciences who need to build or refresh a science foundation.

I welcome students at every starting point — those aiming for top scores and those who simply want to stop dreading the subject. Sessions are available in person in the Greater Boston area and online, with a flexible schedule.
