About Bethany

Being a student myself, I am all too aware of how stressful school can be, especially if you feel you need some extra support or that you are being left behind. I remember really struggling during my A Levels, and feeling as though that meant that I was not smart enough and could not achieve the grades I wanted. I was lucky enough to have an older student tutor me and it turned everything around. It made me realise that sometimes you just need to go through something a little slower, or have it explained in a different way. As a result, I was able to turn DBB at the end of year 12 into AAA at the end of year 13 and get into my dream university, but more importantly I was able to restore confidence in myself and my abilities. One size does not fit all, and that is why I think tutoring is so important. I started by tutoring a family friend through his maths A Level, which he went on to receive an A* grade in, and then I spent time over the last year mentoring some aspiring chemistry students through a scheme that my university ran. This involved not only a tutoring element, but also a support element, in which I was able to help them with things like personal statements and university applications, exam stress, and anything else that they simply wanted to vent about. This also gave me vital experience with virtual tutoring - something which I had not done before the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall I hope that my lessons can not only give you the tools to learn more independently and ultimately achieve your academic goals, but also encourage you to believe in yourself more, by finding the best way to learn for you.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring is mostly student-led. Typically I will do 1hr or 2hr sessions covering specific content that you request to cover. For the first session we will go through the course specification to identify problem areas (if you have not already identified them). From then on I will make a rough study plan that allows us to cover all of the content and each week we will either work through relevant exam questions, or run a more teaching based session on a topic, or do a mix of both. This will depend on what you express you would prefer. The plan for the sessions will always remain flexible so that if it takes more or less time to work on something than we originally planned, we can accommodate that. Nearer the exams I will also leave a few sessions open for studying exam technique, or going back over problem areas.
