« Perfect! My son is taking chess lessons from Cengiz for the last two months. He is very knowledgeable about the game, professional, flexible (in terms of scheduling), and patient. What we liked most about him is that he is very good at guiding his student through the thinking/ analysing the moves by asking good questions instead of just telling the student what to do. He has helped my son a lot during his lessons and we feel quite satisfied with his teaching style and approach. In fact he even mentored him when he enrolled for his first ever chess tournament recently. We would definitely recommend him as a chess tutor. »

Perfect! So far, I had 2 lessons with Cengiz and I am planning to have 2 lessons per week for the foreseeable future as he is an excellent chess player who has an academic approach to it. He is very articulate and clear as you can see from his YouTube videos which is very helpful for a student like myself. In addition to that, Cengiz did a great deal of prep work before both lessons we had which shows his professional attitude and willingness to go the extra mile for his students.

Cengiz's response

I had a very enjoyable lesson with Paulius and he wants to develop his playing strength. He is willing to study in order to reach his target.

Cengiz is a very reliable coach and an excellent communicator with great position understanding. Cengiz is patient and well researched, extremely pationate about the game. He draws knowledge from his job as a translator and university tutor and can communicate effectively in a variety of different languages.

He has a very solid style - hope it rubs off on your game like it did mine.

Cengiz is very professional and knowledgeable coach. I first got acquainted with him when I visited his chess school in Kyrenia whilst being on holiday there. I first observed him whilst he was teaching kids. He explained the Petrov defence to them. I am no stranger to Petrov defence but I was really impressed by the depth of Cengiz’s knowledge and realised how little I knew in comparison to him. Cengiz delivered his lecture in a very measures way and calibrated his deliver in a very comprehensible manner. He gave regular examples from chess openings to corroborate his points. One pleasant surprise for was the description of the Shepherd’s mate in Turkish. Within a short space of time I learned a lot from Cengiz on Petrov defence and linguistic beauty of the turkish language. As a keen chess player and father of two kids I can say with confidence that I would be delighted if Cengiz was the tutor of my kids. Cengiz is a rare type of chess tutor from whom one can learn not only good chess but also how to be a decent human being.

Interview with Cengiz

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?
Cengiz — I started playing chess in London when I was 9 years old. I learned it at Primary School but developed myself at a Club in Kyrenia, Northern Cyprus.
QUESTION 02 | 08
Which artists or works affect you the most?
Cengiz — I have been influenced by Gary Kasparov and Bobby Fischer whom are 2 of chess' greats!
QUESTION 03 | 08
What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?
Cengiz — In order to be a good coach, you need to be patient, attentive to your students' needs, be disciplined, humble, good at psychology (in order to motivate (to study chess) and console your students (after setbacks) as well as being knowledgeable and friendly.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?
Cengiz — I tell them to keep their goal in mind and this helps them in the tough times. Developing at chess is not usually plain sailing. There are ups and downs so the student should not lose sight of their goal.
QUESTION 05 | 08
How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?
Cengiz — I love chess and cannot think of a life without it. I can spend many hours a day involved in chess without getting bored. I like playing and teaching it and I see myself as a chess ambassador as I believe that chess helps students develop in areas such as decision making, planning and overcoming obstacles.
QUESTION 06 | 08
What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?
Cengiz — I am proud of my results against International Masters and Grandmasters. I have managed to draw against England's 7th best player at the time and beat Turkey's 6th best player in 2012. As a coach, seeing the effect I have had on my students fills me with pride. I take a lot of pleasure in seeing my students making lots of progress. In particular, I can say that helping an 11 year old unrated player achieve a 1700+ elo performance at an Internationally rated tournament in Novi Sad, Serbia is currently my finest coaching achievement.
QUESTION 07 | 08
Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?
Cengiz — I have been very surprised by a 6 year old Russian boy's progress in Kyrenia (Girne) in Northern Cyprus. I believe that he is Grandmaster material as his chess instincts are phenomenal!

Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?
Cengiz — I am grateful to Superprof for the students it finds me. I try to be as disciplined, helpful, conscientious as possible and always give 100% to improve my students' level.
